In April the 2010 General Election was called. We can be forgiven for thinking it was announced months ago as the parties are well into the swing of their campaigning - all against a backdrop of the biggest scandal to rock our Parliament in recent times. Because of the furore over expenses, apathy may take over and that can be dangerous.
Although politicians may have put us off politics we, as Christians, have a responsibility to uphold and be involved in the democratic process. There are important issues to be addressed as the election approaches. We will hear much about the economy, education, and the health service. I suspect we will hear less about major choices to be made in world affairs – global warming, peace-making in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and our own defence needs.
Not least among the issues we are asked to vote on is this: how will we, as a nation, treat those who are among the weakest and most vulnerable in our society and in our world? As we vote, we do so not just for ourselves, but for the well-being of the whole community. I urge you to vote prayerfully and carefully.
